Some Minimal Safety Equipment and Requirements
 
Visual Distress signals (all with approval number)
<16' By Night: 1 electric SOS flashlight
16' - 65' by Day only: 1 orange flag; 3 floating or hand-held orange smoke signals (not required on no-power sailboats less than 26', or rowboats, or while racing;
By Day and Night: 3 hand-held, or 3 pistol, or 3 hand-held rocket, or pyrotechnic red flares. (all suitable for day use also.)
 
Personal Flotation Devices (approved)
<16' - one type I, II, III per person
16' - 65' - one type I, II, III per person and one type IV per boat
 
Ventilator ducts:
At least 2 ventilator ducts fitted with cowls or their equivalent to ventilate efficiently the bilges of every engine and fuel tank compartment of boats built or decked-over after April 25, 1940 and using gasoline or other fuel with a flash point less than 110°F.
 
Lengths Bells Whistles and Horns:
<16' None required, but must have some means of making an efficent sound sign.
16' - 65' Mouth, hand or Power Whistle audible at least 1/2 mile
26' - 29' Hand or Power Whistle audible at least 1 mile
<39' 1 Bell, Power Whistle audible at least 1 mile
<328' Bell, Power Whistle, and Gong.
